Background

The Health unit has its roots of existence anchored in the times of evangelism of white fathers who started the catholic faith at Nyamigisa catholic parish as early as 1911. The main pillars of their mission were; to preach the word of God, fight illiteracy by introducing formal education and improving the health status of the people in the area.

As far as health was concerned, in 1975 they started by only dispensing medicines for common illnesses to community since there were inadequate health services in the area.

In 1978 the Christian community together with the parish council resolved to continue dispensing medicines to the community in a designated place and a small dispensary was started.

Since 1985 to date the Banyatereza sisters were entrusted the responsibility to manage the dispensary and have gradually transformed it to a Health Centre currently at level 3 according to Ministry of Health grading.

However upon celebration of the centenary anniversary of the existence of Nyamigisa catholic parish (24/09/2011), the parish council together with the then parish priest resolved to start up a project to mark the memory of that milestone and it was agreed that gradually the Health Centre be transformed to a memorial hospital, “SACRED HEART NYAMIGISA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL”.

History Con'td

This marked the beginning of construction of an OPD block that was completed and is currently being used and there is hope of gradually putting up other structures to accommodate other departments required to attain hospital level, a dream whose achievement has been delayed by limited financial ability of the facility.

The completion of the OPD block led to the shifting from the old health Centre premises to this new block with more space of operation to serve the increasing population of the area.

This current structure is made up of an outpatient department consisting of a reception area,a consultation room, laboratory room ,injection room, Dispensing room ,EPI Vaccine fridge room, in charge’s office room, medicine store room, health education area and 5 rooms each with a capacity of two beds improvised for inpatient care.

The previous Health Centre premises were reserved to offer MCH services which include Antenatal care, Immunization, Deliveries and post-natal care.
